A bar inside of the Stoa Colomvou
The word “stoa” in Greek language means “arcade”. In Thessaloniki there are numerous arcades, most of them existing from the Ottoman period until now. This lasting history of these monuments inspired some creative residents of our city who took advantage of them in order to utilize them for many and several reasons. The result here is an arcade which “hosts” some unique and fascinating bars where you can savour your drink with pleasure. Μιλένα-Αναστασία Π.
And in that moment, I swear, they were infinite. Thessaloniki, 2013.When circumstance, fate and luck come together.
This picture depicts exactly what comes to my mind when thinking of spontaneous street photography. I wanted to photograph the Aristotelous square which is located in the center of Thessaloniki. Something is happening at all times in this square. It is a meeting point, an event center and a landmark surrounded by shops, cafes, restaurants and offices. As I was walking by trying to capture a picture with good perspective, a man selling balloons stepped in front of my camera while a flock of pigeons flew over. I captured the seconds that followed. The result was just a typical moment that one can only experience in Aristotelous square. The rest of the photograph shows a part of what one might come across when visiting the square, cyclists, traders and an outdoor concert. This picture is a great example of the things I think of when describing my love for Thessaloniki. Αγγελική M.
Drive me to the moon and let me park there too. Thessaloniki, 2013.If you allowed the citizens of Thessaloniki to park there, they probably would.
This picture depicts the problem Thessaloniki is facing with parking, shot from a different angle. Life in Thessaloniki revolves around the city center therefore the use of cars in this particular part of the city is immense. Despite this fact the available parking spots and the official public parking spaces are very limited. This omission on behalf of the municipal authorities has caused the problem of illegal parking. People park their cars blocking bicycle lanes, pavements (as seen in the photograph), bus lanes or even parallel to another car therefore causing problems with the transit and worsening the traffic. Some initiatives have been taken but the problem is still extreme considering the city’s size and population. Αγγελική M.
History is riding through the colors of our times
The statue of Alexander the Great in Thessaloniki’s seaside and barricades full of graffiti around the construction site. History is riding through the colors of our times… Χρήστος Γ.
Imprisoned colors
In times of crisis, the material and the immaterial decay hand in hand. Closed working spaces translate into unemployed people and abandoned places remain reminiscent of happier days. Remains to hope that the lock will open again, before the colors fade. Ελίζα N.
In the harbor
A spot that has been put in good use by the Municipality and the young community of the city. A meeting place and a straight reference point of the city. In the harbor looking the city and the white tower. Βίκυ Χ.
Lost in communication
AS FAR AS THE PICTURE I AM DECIDED TO CHOOSE IS A CARD PHONE WHICH IS SITUATED ON A PUBLIC PLACE AND ESPECIALLY IN THE SQUARE OF SAINT SOPHIAS CHURCH..I BELIEVE THAT EVERYBODY AMONG PEOPLE THAT LIVE IN MY HOMETOWN , HAD ALREADY UNDERSTOOD THE DISTINCION OF THIS KIND OF TELEPHONES.THEY HAD SITUATED IN PAST YEARS FROM MAYOR IN ORDER TO HELP PEOPLE COMMUNICATE WITH OTHER PEOPLE IN SOME OTHER PLACE ON EARTH OR IN THEIR COUNTRY IN GENERAL. ALTHOUGH TECHNOLOGY HAS DEVELOPED AND MOBILES PHONES HAS REPLACED OUR HABIT TO CALL FROM A CARD PHONE, I BELIEVE WE MUST NOT DESTROY THEM AND TO COVERED WITH DIRTY OBJECTS OR SMASH IT FOR REVENCE, BECAUSE I FIRMLY BELIEVE THAT IS AN KIND OF TECHNOLOGY THAT STILL IS USEFULL FOR THE SOCIETY.ACCORDIND TO THIS, I WANT TO ADD SOME BENEFITS THAT IT CAN GIVE YOU , SUCH AS THE CHANCE TO CALL WHEN YOU HAVE A PROBLEM WITH YOUR MOBILE PHONE , WHEN YOU ARE IN DANGER, WHEN YOU DON’T HAVE ENOUGH MONEY TO PAY FOR A CARD FOR YOUR MOBILE PHONE, AND WHEN YOU MUST CALL SOMEONE FROM A FOREIGN COUNTRY AND YOU DON’T WANT TO PAY A LOT. Finally, DUE TO THE FACT THAT ,WE ARE GETTING A DIFFICULT ECONOMICAL AND INTERCULTURAL PERIOD, I FIRMLY BELIEVE THAT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT WE MUST NOT FORGET THAT WE ARE FIRST OF ALL HUMANS....!! THANASIS K.
My favorite places in Thessaloniki
Photo of a young man who shows off his skills in skateboarding in What's Up Park near the new beach of Thessalonica. A park with facilities for sports such as skateboarding, BMX and the trampoline, with parkour training places and a golf paintball. From my favorite places in Thessaloniki. I believe that the construction of this park is a very good initiative that certainly meets this looking the new generation. Χρήστος Γ.
Notice - understand - take power - act
A moody emotional photography with a view of Thessaloniki's port. Winter weather can captivate all the feelings that people tend to have because is a time of internal awareness, so represents all the strength that is needed to carry on and represent the best of themselves, as individuals!! Kerasa Sasa O.
One city, many facets
Walking around the city, images like these are very likely to meet...stray dogs, dirt, trash. A lady dressed in black feeding the birds. A story brimming with thoughts and feelings, but also torn between contradictions and its connotations. The white color, that is the purity, holiness, the marble monument bears and on the other hand, the black color in the clothes of the old lady, some nun, that in any case calls for our sympathy. In front of the monument of Eleftherios Venizelos, one stands to admire a man of politics, a period in Greek history, however, behind him, unravels another story, another image of the city. It is about what reality you choose to see. Αγγελική Τ.
Pond with water lilies in the new beach
The photo is the new beach, one of the theme parks, ''The water garden'' an area with water as dominant element. A large water surface was constructed on one side of the garden and the widest range of it was planted with hydrophilic plants like water lilies and reeds. Κατερίνα Β.
The place of the city where everything is allowed - all night entertainment, lights, people and music. Βασιλης Β.
The problem of the marine pollution
This photo highlights the problem of the marine pollution in Thermaikos Gulf. Citizens having a rest across the seaside can’t anymore enjoy a beautiful landscape because rubbish and dirt have given the seawater that greenish color that also smells awful. Νιόβη Χ.
